15-year-old Christopher has an extraordinary brain: He is exceptional at mathematics but ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched, and he distrusts strangers. Now it is 7 minutes after midnight, and Christopher stands beside his neighbor’s dead dog, Wellington, who has been speared with a garden fork. Finding himself under suspicion, Christopher is determined to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington, and he carefully records each fact of the crime. But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a thrilling journey that upturns his world.
The story presented in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is much more than an exploration of an individual whose differently-wired mind is full of logic and numbers and patterns and detailed memories. It is a story about family; about maths and maps; about truth-telling; about space and railways; and about inspiration and bravery. Christopher’s transparent innocence, unique observations and constellation of idiosyncrasies provide a fascinating and fresh perspective on a complex adult world.
Staging this play throws up the challenge of how to climb into the brain of Christopher and mine its calculations, contemplations and recollections. Put simply, it is our hope that by creatively using many voices and bodies and technical elements, the audience can experience things in the way that Christopher does. And, if successful, the audience will leave with a greater understanding of and, perhaps, empathy with those like Christopher.
